Improvement of ionospheric electron density estimation with GPSMET occultations using Abel inversion and VTEC information

چکیده
[1] As it is known, the Abel transform has been proven to be a useful tool that offers the possibility to obtain vertical description of ionospheric electron density (among other neutral atmosphere parameters) through inversion of Global Positioning System (GPS) observations gathered by Low Earth Orbiters (LEO). This work is focused on extending the application of this technique to GPSMET data considering Vertical Total Electron Content. With this information, the horizontal variability of the electron concentration is accounted for. This approach shows how this information improves the results obtained in electron densities with respect to the traditional approach of Abel inversion that assumes spherical symmetry. Moreover, the ability of this inversion algorithm to obtain true-height profiles of electron density is contrasted with common procedures to obtain these profiles, especially the hmF2 parameter.

1 COSMIC GPS Ionospheric Sensing and Space Weather
As our civilization becomes more dependent on space based technologies, we become more vulnerable to conditions in space weather. Accurate space weather specification and forecasting require proper modeling which account for the coupling between the sun, the magnetosphere, the thermosphere, the ionosphere and the mesosphere. In spite of the tremendous advances that have been made in understandi...
متن کاملIonospheric and plasmaspheric electron contents inferred from radio occultations and global ionospheric maps
We introduce a methodology to extract the separate contributions of the ionosphere and the plasmasphere to the vertical total electron content, without relying on a fixed altitude to perform that separation. The method combines two previously developed and tested techniques, namely, the retrieval of electron density profiles from radio occultations using an improved Abel inversion technique and...

Measurements of the dual frequency Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers can be used to calculate the electron density and the total electron content (TEC) of the ionosphere layer of the Earth atmosphere. TEC is a key parameter for investigating the ongoing spatial and temporal physical process of the ionosphere. For accurate estimation of TEC from GPS measurements, GPS satellites and GPS r...
متن کاملAnalysis of ionospheric electron density distribution from GPS/MET occultations
In this paper we present results from analysis of GPS/MET occultation data obtained from the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research database. We have used High-Rate occultation data to study the performance of an earlier 4D ionospheric electron content model|obtained tomographically with the use of the GPS constellation|with satisfactory results. In addition, we have processed UCAR Lev...
متن کاملEvaluating the effect of the global ionospheric map on aiding retrieval of radio occultation electron density profiles
Radio occultation (RO) has been proven to be a powerful technique for ionospheric electron density profile (EDP) retrieval. The Abel inversion currently used in RO EDP retrieval has degraded performance in regions with large horizontal gradients because of an assumption of spherical symmetry as indicated by many studies. Some alternative methods have been proposed in the past; the global ionosp...
